Yahweh > Dagon
1 Samuel 5:2-4
2 Then the Philistines took the ark of God and brought it to the house of Dagon and set it by Dagon. 3 When the Ashdodites arose early the next morning, behold, Dagon had fallen on his face to the ground before the ark of the Lord. So they took Dagon and set him in his place again. 4. But when they arose early the next morning, behold, Dagon had fallen on his face to the ground before the ark of the Lord. And the head of Dagon and both palms of his hands were cut off on the threshold; only the trunk of Dagon was left to him. 1 Samuel 5:2-4
Once again, it seems the enemy has won! The church, once in control of the Ark, basking in the presence of their God, now find themselves defeated and defending itself. They gave their best effort but proved to be incapable of defending Him. Many have fallen on the battlefield, and the hope of those who have survived was slain with them.
Yahweh does not need us to defend Him. He needs us to represent Him!
Yahweh makes Dagon fall on his face before him in a position of worship. The enemy believed this victory was a sign that Dagon was greater. Still, Yahweh demonstrated His superiority by placing his face down and removing both Dagon’s head and his palms. Dagon cannot speak for the people nor lend a hand to the people.
Even their victory was the result of Yahweh’s allowing. Yahweh left him a trunk because a false god can only sit and watch as his worshipers suffer, while the one true and living God can not only provide wisdom but still has the hands to help!
Lord, we don’t understand why we experience trials and tribulations, but we do know you have your head, and you have your hands! God, we know that every knee shall bow to you, and those without knees will fall prostrate on their face in your presence. God, you are all-powerful! You alone deserve all the glory and honor! Amen!
