Spared from the Spear

1 Samuel 18:11

And Saul hurled the spear for he thought, “I will pin David to the wall.” But David escaped from his presence twice. 1 Samuel 18:11

So often, the people of God have been in service of their oppressor and or a servant to their enemy. We have been forced to act as labor and entertain those who are in power, and utilize our power, talents, and gifts as resources to help them while they rule, and to comfort them in their distress.

David stands in Saul’s presence, armed with a harp that is to bring Saul peace, playing for his delight while fearing for his life. Unable to defend himself, his duty places him in a vulnerable position. Though in danger, David continues to serve Saul as working unto the Lord.

Lord, there are those that desire to pin your people to the wall! Lord, we work under harsh conditions and must maintain focused under extreme pressure. God, protect our production and protect our peace. Thwart every spear thrown. Deny every arrow hurled. Provide a well where there is drought. Provide seed where there is famine. Bring joy where there is sadness. Provide courage where there is fear.

Lord, we are grateful that you are omnipresent. We know that the presence of our enemy does not mean the absence of your presence. You are a very present help in a time of trouble! We know you can and will protect your children. Thank you, God, for sparing us from the spears. Thank you, God, for making a place for us in the presence of our enemy! You are our God and fully worthy of our praise!
