WHAT IF?

“Then after I have poured out my rains again, I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your old men will dream dreams. Your young men will see visions.” Joel 2:28

We are blessed to live in the time where God has poured out His Spirit upon all people, including Black people. The pouring of His Spirit is prophetic in nature. It allows men and women to make divinely inspired utterances. And it allows them to experience revelatory dreams and visions. Dreams and visions take one into the revelatory realm of not now but “what if.”

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. dreamed in the Spirit at the March on Washington. His was essentially a list of “what ifs.” One of them was: “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

Let us likewise dream in the Spirit! What if:

  • …there really was liberty and justice for all?

  • …Black children no longer had to receive “the talk” when leaving home?

  • …teachers had no implicit bias against our children?

  • …there was no redlining or gerrymandering?

  • …white people in power treated all people fairly?

  • …suspicion would cease when we entered department stores?

  • …the achievement gap in public education closed?

  • …the wealth gap between white and Black America ceased?

  • …all people were treated like they were created in the image of God?

Prayer: Eternal God, sustain our ability to dream through Your Spirit. Ignite our hope and faith through dreams and visions. Give us glimpses into a better future on earth and in eternity. Amen.
