FREEDOM IS FRAGILE
“Christ has set us free to live a free life. So, take your stand! Never again let anyone put a harness of slavery on you.” Galatians 5:1 Msg
”All of us are free as long as no one tramples on us.” Tess Onwueme
For Black people in American freedom is not like the freedom Christ provides. When He sets someone free of their sins and of their past, they are free indeed. But in America, the operative phrase for a Black man or woman’s freedom is “as long as.”
We are NOT free as long as:
• Corporations allow a “good old boy” culture to exist
• The Supreme Court is not stacked with ultra-conservatives
• The president supports white supremacy
• Police officers are excused for racial profiling and brutality
• There are racist judges, prosecutors, and jurors
• Redlining and gerrymandering is practiced
• Systematic racism is denied by those in power
• Public schools staff teachers with implicit bias
• Municipalities refuse to spend tax dollars in our communities
• White Christians refuse to call racism sin
We must take a stand against all forms of enslavement. We must protest! We must vote! We must petition our God for freedom.
Prayer: Dear Lord thank you for the freedom we have in You. Set us free from the hatred, discrimination, bias, and brutality… set us free from systems that oppress us, set us free from power structures that are abusive, set us free from people who want to enslave us emotionally, psychologically, and financially. Set us free in Jesus’ name.
Amen.
